Jomyo-ji Temple
Founded in 1188 by Ashikaga Yoshikane, the temple later became a Rinzai Zen temple and in the Muromachi period was ranked fifth of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kamakura. It is only a short walk from Hokoku-ji, which makes it an easy next stop on the Temple Path.
Highlights
- A spacious precinct and a main hall surrounded by green.
- Kisenan, a tearoom from the late 16th century that was restored in 1991. You can drink matcha while looking out over its dry landscape garden.
For travelers at Wakaremichi
The bamboo of Hokoku-ji, the dry garden of Jomyo-ji: walk them one after the other and you notice how differently two Zen temples can shape a garden. This is the place to sit down at the end of the Temple Path.
