Grave of Minamoto no Yoritomo (Hokkedo site)

North of Wakaremichi, halfway up a hill overlooking Okura, where Yoritomo founded his shogunate. His private chapel, the Hokkedo, once stood here. The stone pagoda you see today was put in order in the Edo period.

Highlights

  • A small grave at the top of a flight of stone steps, a quiet place set apart from the bustle of the sights.
  • The area at the foot of the hill is the site of the Okura shogunate. It is a residential neighborhood today, but this is where the Kamakura shogunate began.

From Wakaremichi

Head north from Wakaremichi on the road a little west of Egara Tenjin. A short detour from the Valley Path.
